The first AGM of the Stag Community Arts Centre charity took place on Saturday 15 October. An introduction by the Chairman, Cllr Eyre, was followed by the presentation of annual report and accounts, election of chairmen, appointment of auditor and questions from the public.
During his presentation, Cllr Raikes handed a cheque for £2,574 to Cllr Eyre, Chairman of the Trustees, which represents half of the money raised for his charity events during 2010. (The other half was presented to SAYT, Cllr Raikes’ other nominated charity).
During his year as mayor, Cllr Raikes – amongst his 220 attended events - hosted a charity film night, raffle, quiz and gala night which involved him personally taking to the stage to sing to raise money for his chosen charities.
He said: “The Stag is one of the major attractions in Sevenoaks that helps to put us and keep us on the map. It is the archetypical community enterprise and community is one of the benefits of Sevenoaks. The charity gala showcased Sevenoaks to VIP guests from all over the county, and we showcased the Stag by putting on the most fabulous show with a stellar cast with stars from national television compered by Graham Cole, one of The Stag’s patrons.”
He finished his presentation speech by praising the staff and volunteers of The Stag Community Arts Centre who have made this such a vibrant and dynamic venue. The money will be used to purchase new tills.
Cllr Eyre, in his Chairman’s introduction said: “The Stag now brings in around a quarter of a million people a year into the town of Sevenoaks providing vibrancy throughout the day for shops and to the night time economy for pubs and restaurants. More than 16,000 young people actively are doing something artistic with links to schools throughout Sevenoaks District. Nearly 240,000 tickets are sold across 6,000 film showings and more than 800 events and perhaps most tellingly more than 12,000 hours of volunteer time and enthusiastic effort.”
Cllr Eyre on behalf of the Trustees thanked Jamie Alexander Wilson and Magic Beans Productions which provides the professional pantomime and youth outreach across Sevenoaks District aided by generous sponsorship from Sevenoaks District Council of £50,000 per year. He also made a point of thanking Brandywine Music, Cheryl Baker, Jill McGrogan, Sevenoaks Summer Festival, Sevenoaks’ local theatre group SCAT, Friends of Stag and patrons Gloria Hunniford, Graham Webb MBE, Cheryl Baker and Graham Cole.
To the people of Sevenoaks and District he concluded: “Thank you for your support in the past and please do join us in the future; as a volunteer, as a participant or as a customer providing, supporting and enjoying the varied entertainment and events put on by the Stag Community Arts Centre for the people of Kent and beyond.”
